1.Enjoy time with your stepchildren: Stepchildren should be assets, rather than liabilities, in your life. To have good relationships with them, you need to spend quality time with them and interact in meaningful, pleasurable ways. Since quality relationships are built from one-on-one interactions, spend private time with each of your stepchildren. Find common interests and activities, such as a hobby or a sport, to do with them. It's easier to develop a caring, loving, and friendly relationship with your stepchildren when you don’t have the burden of parental responsibilities and can simply enjoy your time together instead.
My personal response:
Honestly, I don't think I can say this any better!!! The above post is PERFECT!
When Chad & I married, I became the primary parent at home and also the parent that would exchange children the majority of the time. THIS IS PART OF A STEP-MOM LADIES!!! In my opinion it is anyway. We had/have a long commute while exchanging the lil man so we have tons of quality time in the car. We sing, play games, & TALK! When the big kids were smaller, we always tried to find common ground and yes, sometimes it was hard but you work at it. My oldest boy (now 19) & I were inseparable. There was nothing that I would do without him. Through the years, and even today, I can safely say its paid off. I will never say that we haven't had some hard times along the way,but given the time spent together, has had major impact in our relationship. He is as close to me as if he were my own son.
If its nothing but watching movies, reading, listening to music, playing sports, DO IT! Its well worth the time. HECK, we still sit down as a family & color! Even DAD!!. WOW....I cant tell you how relaxing and rewarding that is. When you are doing something of interest to them, it shows that you are interested in them and the activities they enjoy.
We as step-moms have a huge impact on our children's lives & good, personal, quality time will impact how they see the world.......AND you as a PARENT! ;)
